Nijmegen was once the largest Roman city in the Netherlands. In Museum Het Valkhof you will learn all about life at that time and the Roman army. The extensive collection of archaeological finds introduces you to daily life back then. Learn how the Roman soldiers built their forts, how trade routes connected the city with the rest of the empire and what influence the Romans had on the culture and infrastructure of the region.

The collection includes archaeological finds such as jewelry, weapons, coins and utensils that bring daily life to life. In addition, you will learn how the Romans built their temples, bath houses and dwellings and what influence they had on the city that Nijmegen is today

Impressive collections

The museum houses an extensive and varied collection consisting of three main sections:

  • Archaeology: This section displays a rich collection of archaeological finds from prehistoric, Roman and medieval times of Nijmegen and its surroundings.
  • Ancient Art: Here you will find paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures and silverware.
  • Modern art: This department presents works of Pop Art and contemporary expressionism from 1960 onwards, with pieces by both national and international artists.

Opening hours and practical information

The current location of the Valkhof Museum is temporarily closed. We have established a temporary location at Keizer Karelplein 33 in Nijmegen. Museum Het Valkhof is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00. On holidays such as Good Friday, Easter and May 5, the museum is also accessible. Please note: the museum is closed on Mondays (except during the Christmas vacations), New Year's Day, King's Day and the Friday of the entry of the Four Days Marches.
